At St Vincent’s, our French curriculum is designed to introduce children to the beauty and richness of the French language and culture in a way that is engaging, interactive and fun. Guided by Catholic values, our approach fosters a respectful and inclusive environment where language learning is seen as an opportunity for exploration, creativity, and connection.  The intent is to foster a lifelong appreciation of language learning, cultural awareness, and communication skills in our pupils.

There are five strands to learning French at St Vincents.

  1. Linguistic Competence:We want to provide our children with a solid foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French.
  2. Cultural Awareness:We believe that offering children the opportunity to learn another language helps them gain an understanding of the cultural and historical context behind the language, enriching their worldview and deepening their appreciation for diversity.
  3. Communication Skills:We want to develop pupils’ confidence in using French in both written and spoken form, using authentic texts, songs and finger rhymes to enhance their cultural awareness
  4. Cross-Curricular Links:We aim to integrate language learning with other subjects and promote an interdisciplinary approach.
  5. Lifelong Learning:We hope to instil a love for languages which prepares students for further language study in KS3 and beyond. We’d love to think that our children will call upon these language skills when on holiday now and in the future!

We want our French curriculum to support our children in broadening their perspective of the world around them.  By fostering this awareness, we help our pupils build empathy and cultivate a respect for all people, empowering them to play an active and valuable role in our interconnected global society.

Our MFL Subject Leader is Mrs C. Spowell.
