“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
Design and Technology is a key part of our curriculum, reflecting the creativity and innovation at the heart of God’s creation. Our Design and Technology curriculum supports our Catholic ethos by promoting Gospel values such as love, hope, service, and compassion. Through designing, making and evaluating children use their God-given talents to serve others, solve problems, and contribute to the world with kindness and purpose. Hands-on learning nurtures imagination and originality, ensuring every child feels valued and inspired.
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning, we follow a progressive teaching programme from Year 1 to Year 6 using the Kapow scheme. This provides a clear progression of skills and knowledge, aligned with the National Curriculum. Children create products with real-life purpose, focusing on Mechanical Systems, Structures, Textiles, Electrical Systems, and Cooking & Nutrition. Inspired by designers, engineers, chefs and architects, they explore different cultures and historical influences. Lessons follow a structured cycle of designing, making, and evaluating, with each stage equally important. The design process is rooted in real-world contexts, making learning meaningful. During the making phase, pupils have choices in tools and materials, fostering artistry and independence. In the evaluation stage, they reflect on their work against design criteria, developing confidence, resilience, and decision-making skills. Technical knowledge and subject-specific vocabulary are embedded throughout, building a strong foundation of understanding.
Cross-curricular links deepen understanding, connecting Design and Technology with subjects like History, Science, Computing, and Geography. Whether exploring historical inventions, using digital tools, or considering environmental impact, children apply their skills in meaningful ways. To further inspire our young designers, we offer a Design and Technology Club, where pupils explore materials and techniques beyond the classroom. During whole school initiatives, children enjoy working on large scale projects, fostering collaboration and practical skills.
By developing knowledge of tools, materials, and safety, our learners are prepared for an increasingly technological world. Rooted in Catholic values, we inspire resourcefulness, and critical thinking, encouraging children to use their skills for the common good. Our goal is to shape thoughtful, responsible innovators who contribute to a better future.
