The purpose of this meeting was to inform you of the Year 1 Phonics Screen Check and how you can support your child further. Please take a look through the powerpoint if you were unable to attend. Further information and resources that were given out on the night will be sent home this week.
Please remember that it highly important that NO HOLIDAYS ARE BOOKED WK COMMENCING 9TH JUNE 2025.
If you have any further questions then please come and speak to the Year 1 teachers.

Reminders
PE:
Tuesday and Fridays – children come into school on those days in their school PE kit (black or dark blue bottoms or shorts, a white plain t-shirt, a black or dark blue hoodie top and trainers.) Your child also needs to bring PE pumps into school in a PE bag and these will stay on your child’s peg throughout the year.
Home reading books:
Your child will receive their reading book and reading record between Monday 23rd September and Friday 27th September. This is to be returned and changed on the day it says in the front of their reading record.
Please sign the reading record when your child reads at home.
Spellings to learn:
Year 1 Spellings
- A list of spellings for your child to learn will be stuck into their home spelling book each week.
- Please practise the spellings throughout the week on rough paper, chalkboards, whiteboards, in sand etc. Make it fun! (Not in this book)
- Return spelling books every Friday to enable the new list to be stuck in ready for the upcoming week.
- Spelling tests will be every Friday.
Phonics Screen Check:
Monday 9th June to Friday 13th June. Please do not book any holidays during this time.
Book bags
These should be brought into school every day.
Water bottles
Children are actively encouraged to bring water bottles into school; they are frequently provided with times to access their water and it is indeed difficult for this to happen if they do not have a their own bottle. Please try to avoid the hard plastic (expensive) bottles, as these crack and break very easily – soft plastic bottles are much easier to fill and are safer. Plastic water bottles can be purchased from the school office.
The bottle must only contain plain water and no juice/squash.
Birthdays We understand that it will be exciting for your child to experience their sixth birthday, but please remember that it is school policy that we do not hand out invitations (unless there is one for each child in the class), Sweets, lollies, cake etc are also not allowed, due to St. Vincent’s being a ‘Healthy School’. Please be reassured that we will celebrate your child’s birthday, by singing to them etc.
Don’t for get to use the SeeSaw App to keep up to date with what the children are learning in class we post updates to the class page on a regular basis
Purple Mash is an award-winning website for primary school children. It enables the children to explore and enhance their knowledge in a fun and creative way. The children have been provided with an individual login to support topics that have been covered in class. Click on link below to access the site:-
(Our Phonics Scheme)
Below are some Little Wandle letter formation sheets that will help support your child in forming their lower case and upper case letters correctly.
Kind regards, Year 1
Book one
This is the same book that the children will have read three times in school – this is a ‘Big Cat Collins’ book. The rationale behind reading the book repeatedly is so that your child reads with confidence and their reading is fluent. This means that they should only be sounding out 1 word in every 10. The other 9 words should be read easily and with automaticity. This book is known as our Reading Practice Book.
If a child cannot decode the book then this will lead to frustration and could put a child off reading completely. Please use as much praise as is possible when your child is reading this book and not deem that it is too easy for them, rather it is that they have become skilled in reading this book over the course of the reading sessions in school.
Book two
This book is our Sharing Book and is a ‘Rising Stars’ book. This book is for you as parents/carers to share the reading with your child. Where your child can attempt familiar words that have been taught in phonics lessons and reading practice sessions, they should do so. You as parents/carers can read the other words your child is less familiar with. This will, in turn, aid your child’s fluency and through discussion about the text improve your child’s vocabulary.
There will be a difference in levels between the reading practice book and the sharing book. This is because the practice book is designed for fluency, speed and accuracy, while the sharing book is meant to stimulate conversation and through the practice of sharing with adults, it is hoped to foster a lifelong love of reading books for pleasure.
