“The painter has the universe in his mind and hands” Leonardo Da Vinci

At St Vincent’s we strive to inspire and encourage our children’s creativity through art and design. Our school strongly believes that art and design is a crucial aspect of a well-rounded education and should be accessible to all pupils. Our art lessons are designed to reflect our Catholic ethos by fostering a deep connection between faith, creativity, and the Gospel values of love, compassion, humility, and justice. These values are integrated into our teaching, encouraging students to express their God-given talents and use their creative abilities in ways that honour their faith and contribute to the greater good.

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art and design, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Year 1 to Year 6 complete three art units a year – Drawing, Painting & Mixed Media and Craft & Design along with completing a Sculpture project every term. We ensure that art and design is given the same importance as core subjects, as we feel this is important in enabling all children to express themselves.

We provide a varied and balanced art curriculum that cultivates enjoyment and appreciation for art and design through the Kapow scheme. Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the national curriculum, are also woven throughout each unit and key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity as the children progress through the school. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Lessons are always practical and encourage experimental and exploratory learning with pupils using sketchbooks to document their ideas.

As a school we celebrate Children’s Art Week each year and dedicate time to explore whole school art projects during this time. An artist of the month competition is also something children can participate in at home and an afterschool art club is offered to a range of year groups across the academic year.

Our Art Subject Leader is Miss O. North.
