Reminders

PE

Children come into school on  their their PE day in their school PE kit (black or dark blue bottoms or shorts, a white plain t-shirt, a black or dark blue hoodie top and trainers.) Your child also needs to bring PE pumps into school in a PE drawstring bag and these will stay on your child’s peg throughout the year. No Rucksacks are allowed in school.

Outdoor Play

Your child will need a coat every day and we ask that you provide a pair of wellies to be left in school at all times.  Please note, we use our outdoor area in all weathers.

Home reading books:

Your child will soon receive their reading book and reading record This is to be returned and changed on the day it says in the front of their reading record. Please sign the reading record when your child reads at home. It is expected that your child reads at least 3 times per week. Please see the Reading section below for further information

Water bottles

Children are actively encouraged to bring water bottles into school; they are frequently provided with times to access their water and it is indeed difficult for this to happen if they do not have a their own bottle. Please try to avoid the hard plastic (expensive) bottles, as these crack and break very easily – soft plastic bottles are much easier to fill and are safer. Plastic water bottles can be purchased from the school office.
The bottle must only contain plain water and no juice/squash.

Birthdays We understand that it will be exciting for your child to experience their sixth birthday, but please remember that it is school policy that we do not hand out invitations (unless there is one for each child in the class), Sweets, lollies, cake  etc are also not allowed, due to St. Vincent’s being a ‘Healthy School’. Please be reassured that we will celebrate your child’s birthday, by singing to them etc.

Book One

This is the same book that the children will have read three times in school – this is a ‘Big Cat Collins’ book. The rationale behind reading the book repeatedly is so that your child reads with confidence and their reading is fluent. This means that they should only be sounding out 1 word in every 10. The other 9 words should be read easily and with automaticity. This book is known as our Reading Practice Book.

If a child cannot decode the book then this will lead to frustration and could put a child off reading completely. Please use as much praise as is possible when your child is reading this book and not deem that it is too easy for them, rather it is that they have become skilled in reading this book over the course of the reading sessions in school.

Book two

This book is our Sharing Book and is a ‘Rising Stars’ book. This book is for you as parents/carers to share the reading with your child. Where your child can attempt familiar words that have been taught in phonics lessons and reading practice sessions, they should do so. You as parents/carers can read the other words your child is less familiar with. This will, in turn, aid your child’s fluency and through discussion about the text improve your child’s vocabulary.

There will be a difference in levels between the reading practice book and the sharing book. This is because the practice book is designed for fluency, speed and accuracy, while the sharing book is meant to stimulate conversation and through the practice of sharing with adults, it is hoped to foster a lifelong love of reading books for pleasure.

Alongside this to further develop reading for pleasure, your child will be issued with a library book.  This will be changed weekly.

Your child will be allocated a day of the week in which these books will be changed.  We ask that you bring your book bag into school every day.

Think Equal is a global initiative that seeks to end the discriminatory mind-set and the cycle of violence across our world and ensure positive life outcomes for our children.
